Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs)
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers are organobromine compounds that are used as flame retardants. Like other brominated flame retardants, PBDEs have been used in a wide array of products, including building materials, electronics, furnishings, motor vehicles, airplanes, plastics, polyurethane foams, and textiles. The health hazards of these chemicals have attracted increasing scrutiny, for they have been shown to reduce fertility in humans at household levels and have been linked to liver toxicity, thyroid toxicity, and neurodevelopmental toxicity in laboratory studies on rats. Studies comparing humans who have higher levels of PBDEs present in their umbilical cord blood at birth have been shown to score lower in tests of mental and physical development. Due to these concerns the European Union has banned the use of PBDEs as have several states in the U.S., including California, Washington and Maine.
Toxic Reports has experience in the analysis of BFRs with a wide range of matrices. For this type of analysis Toxic Report uses the GC-MS method. For GC-MS This method has the advantage that the samples are measured directly without tedious sample preparation. After evaporation from the polymer, the PBB's and PBDE's are separated by gas chromatography and detected in the mass spectrometer.
